Rutgers study reviews health of NJ racing industry

A Rutgers University report outlines some of the challenges faced by the New Jersey horse racing and breeding industry when it’s compared with the industry in two neighboring states in which racing receives revenue from casino-style gambling.

The report by Dr. Karen Malinowski, Professor and Director of the university’s Equine Science Program, updates a 2014 white paper on the same subject. It was released as the New Jersey legislature considers a bill that would award racing and breeding—Thoroughbred and Standardbred—$20 million a year in purse and breed development supplements over a five-year period.
