Aftercare

To ensure happy and healthy retirements for the horses competing at their racetracks.

Even before the national Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance was formed in 2012, THA member groups were at the forefront of the movement to ensure happy and healthy retirements for the horses competing at their racetracks.

The PATHA’s groundbreaking “Turning for Home,” established in 2008, set the standard for state aftercare programs and now finds homes for more than 200 horses every year. The ITHA followed suit with “Galloping Out,” and the NJTHA has partnered with “Second Call.” The DTHA works closely with CANTER MidAtlantic and MidAtlantic Horse Rescue to find homes for retired racehorses at Delaware Park.

NYTHA, in conjunction with the New York Thoroughbred Breeders, created TAKE THE LEAD and TAKE2, which find aftercare placements for horses at New York Racing Association tracks and promotes second careers in the show ring for retired racehorses across the country. The MTHA, which has worked directly with the TAA and with local aftercare organizations, in 2017 launched its “Beyond the Wire” program.

We thank each and every horseman and our racetrack partners that have joined the effort for their support of Thoroughbred aftercare.
