Parx Racing forms Mortality Review Board

Posted: Feb. 3, 2020

The Pennsylvania Thoroughbred Horsemen’s Association Feb. 1 announced that Parx Racing has officially formed a Mortality Review Board.

The Pennsylvania Horse Racing Commission earlier passed a rule that requires each racetrack in the state to collect information related to any catastrophic injury so it can be reviewed as part of an overall effort to improve equine health and safety.

Creation of a Mortality Review Board in each jurisdiction is part of the Mid-Atlantic Strategic Plan to Reduce Equine Fatalities.

The Mortality Review Board at Parx will be chaired by David Osojnak, Director of Racing and Racing Secretary. Other members are PHRC Chief State Steward Jonathan Gerweck; Mike Ballezzi, Executive Director of the PTHA; Donald Smith, the Safety Coordinator at Parx; PHRC Veterinary Medical Officer Dr. Shari Silverman; and jockey Adam Bowman.
