Public meeting set for Belmont Park redevelopment project

Posted: Dec. 7, 2017

Lawmakers are among those expected for a Dec. 10 “listening session” on proposals to develop parcels of land at Belmont Park.

The public meeting will be held at Elmont Memorial High School, which is located at 555 Ridge Road in Elmont. The meeting is scheduled for 4:30-6:30 p.m.

The Empire State Development Corp., which issued the requests for proposal for the Belmont project, said questions can be submitted in written form and may be selected by a moderator to be asked of the bidders.

According to the RFP, the two sites total 36 acres at Belmont in Nassau County, N.Y. One is 28 acres and the other is eight acres. The smaller parcel is adjacent the western end of the racetrack clubhouse and is border to the west by a spur of the Long Island Railroad. The larger parcel is close to single-family homes and street-front retail.

There were originally three bidders, but the Long Island Business Journal Dec. 4 reported one has dropped out. That leaves the New York Islanders and NYCFC Soccer Club in the running, the publication said.

The New York Racing Association earlier announced at two-year renovation of Belmont beginning in the summer of 2018.

The ECDC said written comments will be accepted after the Dec. 10 meeting or via email at belmontcomments@gmail.com by Dec. 11.
