TDN: Rain a fitting tribute to Violette

Rick Violette Jr., the longtime trainer and horsemen’s advocate who died last October, was recognized at Saratoga Race Course July 17 with a stakes named in his memory.

The New York Racing Association changed the name of the Rockville Center Stakes for 2-year-old New York-breds to the Rick Violette Stakes. Despite a downpour, members of Violette’s family as well as host of friends and colleagues were on hand to remember his contributions to horses and people in the racing industry.

Violette was the longtime President of the New York Thoroughbred Horsemen’s Association and the Thoroughbred Horsemen’s Association.
