The Thoroughbred Horsemen’s Association will host an online Continuing Education webinar titled “Going out on Top—Retirement considerations for racehorses and raising the topic with owners” on Monday, Sept. 13, from 2-3 p.m. ET.
Trainers and assistant trainers who participate will earn one hour of CE credit toward the annual CE requirement. In addition, the webinar will be recorded and posted on the new CE website for trainers and assistant trainers, www.HorsemenU.com.
In this interactive webinar, Dr. Juliea McCall will cover the considerations that surround the decision to retire a racehorse in terms of cost (training bills versus potential purse earnings), health (health history and injury risk), and training (hours invested and future goals). We will examine these topics from the perspectives of the owner and trainer in relation to decisions that are in the horse’s best interest.
Following the presentation, there will be an opportunity to ask questions.
McCall is a veterinarian in western New York who cares for numerous off-track Thoroughbreds in varying stages of second careers. She is a graduate of Western University College of Veterinary Medicine in Pomona, Calif., who completed a post graduate internship in equine sports medicine and is certified in veterinary acupuncture and chiropractic. Prior to attending veterinary school, she worked breaking horses for the track and as a hunter/jumper trainer.
