The Jockey Club Sept. 9 said it projects the North American registered Thoroughbred foal crop of 2022 to be 18,700, a drop of 2.6% from the 2021 estimate of 19,200.

The foal crop projection is computed by using Reports of Mares Bred received to date for the 2021 breeding season. RMBs are to be filed by Aug. 1 of each breeding season, but they continue coming in after that date.

Stallion owners who have not returned their RMBs for the 2021 breeding season are encouraged to do so as soon as possible. Interactive Registration, which enables registered users to perform virtually all registration-related activities on the Internet, is the most efficient means of submitting RMBs and is available at registry.jockeyclub.com.

According to The Jockey Club Fact Book, the North American foal crop in 1990 stood at 40,333. From 1991 through 2008, the figure ranged from 38,151 to 32,332.

The foal crop fell under 30,000 in 2009 and with the exception of 2015 has fallen each year since then.
