The Pennsylvania Thoroughbred Horsemen’s Association, which represents horsemen at Parx Racing, works to guarantee the live racing program, protect horsemen’s rights, offer health care and pensions, and provide benevolence programs. The PTHA, which is active in legislative and regulatory issues in Pennsylvania, created the Horsemen’s Purchasing Association, which sells equine supplies on site. The organization also offers various insurance programs for horsemen, a benefit trust for stable employees who are eligible for health insurance, and medical services for backstretch workers. The organization has an 11-member board of five trainers, five owners, and the president. Elections are held once every three years. The PTHA in 2000 inaugurated the Granny Youmans Scholarship Fund to aid stable employees and their dependents.
